The Khula Zulu Village is about a fifteen minute drive from Zulani Guest House. The proceeds of this Zulu Cultural Tour does not go to tour operators but to the children of the village itself for medical, schooling etc. You could consider taking some sweets to hand to the children of the village during the tour - it would be much appreciated. Tours are about three hours in duration and departure times are flexible.

Zulu Cultural Tour

Captivating for visitors is the opportunity to witness the disciplined and dignified social structure of a Zulu homestead (umuzi). Customs pertaining to food and the brewing of beer, ancestoral worship and places of burial, the dress code for men, women and children, the role of the traditional healer (inyanga), the importance of a man's cattle, the system of compensating a father for the loss of his daughter in marriage (lobola), courtship, witchcraft and superstitions are still observed.

A local Zulu guide will meet you at Zulani Guest House for the drive to the Khula Zulu Village. The Zulu Cultural Tour will give you a view of of the "living" Khula Zulu Village and the current way of the Zulu life. With visits to schools, churches, Zulu dancing and even a traditional Sangoma, also known as a witch doctor. Your guide is a resident of this village and will be able to answer your questions about past and current Zulu Culture and affairs. A taste of Zulu beer combined with a traditional Zulu lunch / dinner will round off the experience.

While shopping for curios in St Lucia, you might purchase these from the Zulu women who crafted the goods. She will always pass the artefact to you using her right hand only. The palm of the left hand will be under the right forearm. This custom is significant, and serves to assure you that there are no hidden weapons and you have nothing to fear from her.

A popular souvenir for visitors is Zulu beadwork. One of the most fascinating manifestations of this traditional craft is its unique language. Every colour has a different meaning and a Zulu women can weave a message of love, grief, jealousy, poverty or uncertainty into her patterned creation. Young Zulu girls, in particular, use the vocabulary of the beads to send sweet (or bitter) thoughts to their loved ones.

Around four centuries ago, when beads were already deeply threaded into local African rituals and systems of social status, the Portuguese first moored their ships on the African coastline. Little did they realize they were about to pull off one of the greatest coups in the history of world trade, the European bead industry was on the verge of an unprecedented boom. The translucent hues of the glass beads that were packed in with the European trade offerings appeared so magical to Africans, that they were to effect a most tragic seduction. A five centimetres thick, deep blue, red and white glass bead could fetch seven human beings.
