The many walking trails in and around St Lucia are generally scenic and ecologically unique, ranging from wetlands to beach to dune forest, with the chance of sighting small antelope, zebra, and bush pig. Bird life is plentiful.

Due to the release of Elephants in the Greater St Lucia Wetland park the trails in the Park are no longer self guided, a ranger must be booked at the Cape Vidal KZN Offices.

St Lucia Walking Trails

iGwala Gwala Trail This short trail, within walking distance from Zulani Guest House, is situated on the outskirts of the town. The trail leads through coastal forest, and is adjacent to the St Lucia Estuary. A wide variety of Birds can be seen within an hour, including forest and wetland species. Fisheagle, Kingfisher, Terns and Herons can be seen along the Estuary shores.

Iphiva Trail Starts at the Iphiva camp, about a ten minutes drive from Zulani Guest House. The trail takes about three hours and leads through open grassland with flooded pans in places and then through dense areas of coastal thicket and the edge of the coastal dune forest, an excellent area for seeing most forest birds. One of the magic things about this trail is the sightings, of small antelope, zebra and wildebeest.

Imvubu Trail A 7km guided trail in the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park. The trail leads through incredibly beautiful bush with great sea views and runs along the shores of Lake Bhangazi for a while. Imvubu translated means Hippo and you are sure to view Hippo on this trail.

Mziki Trail A three day guided trail in the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park. It is made up of three circular routes, each returning to Mount Tabor, the base camp. The base camp has a unique view of the Lake St Lucia in the west and the Indian ocean in the east. Accommodation is provided in the old radar station hut which sleeps eight people. The trail crosses grassland, dune forest, beach, freshwater pans and hippo paths. Trees of interest include the ornamental coral tree in the grasslands, the long lived milk wood tree of the dune forests and the rare forest fig.

Emoyeni Trail A five day guided trail in the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park with a stay over at rustic campsites with cold water bucket showers. Tents need to be taken as there is no shelter at the campsites. An armed Field Ranger is provided to walk with you. The daily duration varies from four to six hours and can be adjusted according to the walkers wishes. On this walk you will come into close contact with the wetlands of Lake St Lucia and its different ecosystems. You will view hippos, crocodiles, antelope, buffalo and a great variety of birds.

Mission Rock Trail A walk along uninhabited beach starting at Mission Rocks and continuing north for about an hour to Bats Cave. It is recommended to do this walk at low tide.
