From Zulani Guest House the Big 5 Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park is 55km / 45 minutes drive. Set in the heart of Zululand covering 96 000 hectares, the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park is the oldest permanentely declared reserve in Africa. Where Zulu kings such as Dingiswayo and Shaka hunted and put in place the first conservation laws, where today the "big five" of African legend stalk the verdant savannah. Hluhluwe, pronounced "sush louie", was named after a plant, the thorny rope climber, 'Dalbergia armata'. This plant is called "Umhluhluwe" in Zulu.
The Big 5 Safari - lion, rhino (back & white) elephant, buffalo and leopard are all to be seen in the park, as well as a variety of other species, including cheetah, hyena, wild dog and giraffe. Enjoy a stop over for lunch and drinks at the Mpunyane Restaurant, which caters for all tastes. Situated high on the edge of a steep forested slope, in the Hilltop rest camp commanding breathtaking views of the hills and valleys in the Hluhluwe section of the Park.
When uncontrolled hunting brought many game species to the brink of local extinction, the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park was set aside as protected areas for game in 1895. Through good conservation practices and the world famous project "Operation Rhino", the white rhino population was brought back from global extinction in this park. Numbering less than 20 animals world wide in 1900, they now number in excess of 10 000.
"In the early 1890’s White rhino were thought to be extinct. In the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park, at the junction of the Black and White Umfolozi Rivers a great discovery was made... The last of their kind. Now known throughout the World as THE place to see White (Square-lipped) rhino. The park is more than just the scene of their ‘re-incarnation’." - Kian Barker 2006. Today you'll find at least a fifth of the world's black and white rhino in the Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park.
